Relocating abroad is an exciting but complex journey. Whether you’re retiring, pursuing a new career, or seeking adventure, moving to another country involves careful planning. At StartAbroad, we’ve guided numerous clients through the process, and here are 12 essential steps to ensure your move abroad is a success.
First and foremost, determine what country calls to you. Ideally, you’ve already visited and felt a connection. However, if you’re a frequent traveler or digital nomad, you may have enough knowledge from research to decide, even without a prior visit. For instance, I moved to Costa Rica without visiting beforehand! Consider factors such as weather (do you prefer year-round sunshine or four seasons?), daylight hours (I love Costa Rica’s consistent 12-hour days), and how comfortable you are with the language and culture. Visa options, lifestyle norms, and social interactions should all be part of this decision.
Once you’ve chosen your destination, look into visa requirements. Many countries offer investor visas, such as Portugal’s Golden Visa, which may require a real estate investment. Other countries, like Costa Rica, may offer alternative investment options such as reforestation projects. Make sure you know which visas you qualify for and the associated costs.
If you’re moving with family, it’s important to have them on board early. Whether it’s a partner, kids, or pets, planning is crucial. Consider your child’s schooling options—public vs. private—and the costs of childcare. If you’re bringing a pet, look into airline policies on pet relocation. And if your partner works, check whether they can work remotely or if your visa allows them to work in the new country.
The next big decision is where and how you’ll live. At StartAbroad, we generally recommend renting first, especially if you’re new to a country. Renting gives you the chance to explore different neighborhoods and cities without committing long-term. In some places, real estate markets are less regulated, making it even more important to take your time. If you do decide to buy, make sure you’re working with a qualified agent.
When relocating abroad, you’ll need to decide what to take, ship, store, or sell. Clients typically fall into two categories: those who want to ship everything and those who take a more minimalist approach, packing only what fits in suitcases. If you’re bringing a lot of belongings, shipping a container might make sense. For fewer items, consider air freight or a specialized shipping service.
Determine how you’ll get around in your new country. Will you rely on public transportation, or will you need to buy a car? In cities with excellent public transport, you may be able to get by without a car. But if a car is necessary, research the purchasing process in your destination—it might differ greatly from what you’re used to.
Research your new country’s healthcare system and whether you’ll need private health insurance in addition to public services. In many countries, including Portugal and Spain, public healthcare is affordable and high-quality, but many expats opt for a private plan for more comprehensive coverage.
For U.S. citizens, moving abroad doesn’t mean the end of filing U.S. taxes. You’ll still need to file annually, though you may qualify for exemptions like the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. Depending on your destination, local taxes might apply to your income as well, so it’s a good idea to consult a tax professional before you move.
You may need to open a local bank account, especially if it’s required for your visa. Alternatively, you could maintain your U.S. accounts and use international money transfer services to handle your finances abroad. Make sure you compare fees and exchange rates to minimize costs.
Before you move, it’s helpful to connect with fellow expats. They offer firsthand knowledge and can provide invaluable support during your transition. These communities can answer questions and help you feel more at home in your new country.
Lastly, accept that moving abroad won’t be easy! While the idea of living in a new country is exciting, it’s important to remember that there will be challenges along the way. But with proper preparation and a little patience, you’ll soon be enjoying your new life.
